Pep Guardiola gave the latest on Kevin de Bruyne ahead of Liverpool clash
by Chirag R Bhattad
Pep Guardiola was non-committal when asked about the fitness of Kevin de Bruyne and whether he will start fot the Cityzens in the top of the table clash at the Etihad Stadium on January the 3rd. de Bruyne has missed most of the first half of the season with a pair of medial knee injury, making his first start of the season in the boxing day loss against Leicester.
Interestingly though, he was absent for the next match against Southampton, not even featuring in the matchday 18. Pep Guardiola reported post the game at St. Mary's that Kevin de Bruyne had suffered a setback in his recovery from the knee injury but failed to put a timetable on his return. Guardiola was so non-committal that he could not even tell whether de Bruyne will miss the clash against Liverpool. Here is what he had to say ahead of the crunch top-of-the-table clash:
"I don't know how Kevin De Bruyne is. I know it's not serious, but I don't know if he can play on Thursday."
With no word since the post-match press conference, it is tough to speculate on the fitness of Kevin de Bruyne, and City could surely do with another important midfielder returning to the side. Fernandinho, who returned against Southampton was a timely boost to a City side looking fragile in defense.
City were missing the combative midfielder's tactical fouls and screening of the defense, with John Stones and Ilkay Gundogan failing to impress in the Brazilains absence. With David Silva also coming back into the side, City look ready to go into an almost do-or-die game with a renewed spirit follwing the shock defeats.
