Kolkata: 27th January, 2018 might just mark the final occasion when the most decorated contest of the I-league will be played for the last time ever in the traditional Indian top tier. The two Kolkata clubs are set to move to the Indian Super League (ISL) next season. Alejandro Menendez coached East Bengal had sold 70 percent shares of the club to Quess and now the Red and Gold's voyage to the elite top tier will be bore by their new investor.
Mohun Bagan have also completed their quest to find their investor and the Mariners are all set to announce the name. But when the two Kolkata giants will take the pitch on 27th January, they will not just vie for all three points. After all, a derby is not just a game to win ,it's one to fight.
The two teams however have a challenge ahead- to win the league for one final time before they exit. And for East Bengal, this is all they never managed to do in their journey in the league. The Mariners too will be hoping to avenge the loss of the first leg and this match will most probably decide the chances of the two sides to win the league.
East Bengal are currently at 4th position in the league, having 22 points from 12 games while Mohun Bagan have 21 points from 13 games and are sitting at 6th position in the league table. Both the teams have a lot of work to do to catch up with the league leaders, Chennai City FC, who are currently at 30 points in 13 games.
