Champions League quarterfinals draw: Man City get Tottenham, while Barcelona draw Man Utd
by Chirag R Bhattad
The UEFA Champions League quarterfinals and semifinals draw has been made and it has thrown at us some curveballs. Manchester City will not be traveling too far as they take on Tottenham Hotspurs in the quarterfinals. The first leg of this tie will be taking place at the Wembley stadium on the 9/10th of April with the return leg scheduled for 16/17th of April.
Pep Guardiola will be a little worried with the draw, because in his side of the draw, the other game will be between Juventus FC and AFC Ajax. So if Man City manage to go past Spurs, which they are favourites to, then they will come up against one of Juventus FC and AFC Ajax. Barring any shocks, it will likely be Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus FC, which could mean that Pep Guardiola’s European wait will be stretched into the next season, which looks increasing likely at the moment.
In the other side of the draw, Manchester United have drawn FC Barcelona, with the first leg taking place at the Theatre of Dreams citing security reasons. The Manchester police had informed UEFA before-hand that they will not be able to provide security for both the Manchester clubs if they played their home legs at the same time.
Thus, FC Barcelona will travel to Man Utd, renewing their rivalry at the Old Trafford. While they will be favourites to progress, under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, anything and everything is possible. Meanwhile, Liverpool will be the most happiest with the draw, as they face FC Porto in the quarterfinals, with the first leg taking place at the Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp has been blessed with good Champions League draws as of late, and they will either face their bitter rivals Man Utd or, in more likelihood, FC Barcelona in the semifinals of the Champions League for a place in the finals. All this is contingent to Liverpool going past the impressive Sergio Concecao’s FC Porto, who have recently announced the sale of their star defender Eder Militao to Real Madrid for €50M.
