"Senior officials of the Spanish giants, FC Barcelona and Quess East Bengal Football Club team, met to explore the possibility of an association between the two clubs. The meeting facilitated by Rakuten, the global innovation partner and sponsor of FC Barcelona, was held at Quess House in Bengaluru. Rakuten is incidentally advising FCB on expanding its footprint worldwide," East Bengal FC chairman Ajit Isaac said in a statement released by the official social media handles of East Bengal FC.
Rakuten have charted out plans to expand FC Barcelona's market in different parts of the world and the talks with the Quess East Bengal is a part of this initiative of the Japanese company. While the officials of the club have not divulged many details on this development, it has been however confirmed that the tie-up would mean establishment of technical support for the team in which coaches from the coveted La Masia academy of FC Barcelona will come to India and coaches and players from India would travel to Spain to undergo training at the club.
Apart from this financial support as a major stakeholders of the club looks very likely if the deal is struck. Meanwhile Spanish Coach Alejandro Menendez's contract extension at the club based in Kolkata means that more Spanish players might be inducted in the club next season, favourable towards the possible tieup.
