French World Cup winning forward and two-time third place finisher in the race to win the Ballon d’Or, Antoine Griezmann, has finally decided to move out of Atletico Madrid. The striker has communicated his decision to Diego Simeone and Atletico hierarchy that he does not plan to stay beyond the summer.
Griezmann moved to Atletico Madrid from Real Sociedad at the age of 23 on the back of an impressive season. He immediately became a fan favourite at the Vicente Calderon. Griezmann immediately got his hands on a trophy, winning the Supercopa de Espana in his first full season at Atleti.
He then went on to feature in a UEFA Champions League finals against Real Madrid, losing out to an injury time equalizer and extra time goals. But he did go on and claim European glory, winning the UEFA Europa League in 2018 and the following UEFA Super Cup, cementing his place in the history books of Atletico Madrid.
Griezmann was heavily linked with a move away from Atletico Madrid prior to the World Cup, with the forward deciding to put out a video to quash all speculations and commit his future as Atletico Madrid prepared to move to a new stadium - the Wanda Metropolitano.
But one year on, Antoine Griezmann has released yet another video to announce his decision to move on, as Atleti failed to challenge for Spanish and European Crown, finishing comfortably behind FC Barcelona in La Liga and losing to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus in the Champions League.
Antoine Griezmann has enjoyed a fine spell at Atleti, scoring 133 times in 256 games for the Rojiblancos, with 19 of them coming in the UEFA Champions League and 8 goals in the sole victorious UEFA Europa League campaign.
Griezmann is heavily linked with a move to FC Barcelona yet again, with reports of a £120M move to Barca gaining a lot of traction. PSG and Manchester United are also linked with a move for the Frenchman, but with Lionel Messi and a realistic chance at challenging for the Champions League available at FC Barcelona, it is tough to see Griezmann going away from Spain.
