Valencia: The Indian Women’s Football Team kicked-off their COTIF Cup 2019 campaign with a 0-2 loss to Villarreal CF in here on Thursday.
Sheila Gomez and Nazaret Padron's goals turned out to be the difference between the two sides.
Gomez earned a scrappy early lead for the Yellow Submarines after she slotted home from a poor clearance by the Indian defence.
Sanju Yadav had an opportunity to equalize for India as she leaped higher than markers to reach for the ball but her header went wide.
After the change of sides, the Blue Tigresses upped the ante, trying to make swift moves through the planks. They also managed to earn a free-kick from 20 yards out but couldn't convert it.
With just a little over 10 minutes of regulated 70-minute game to go, Bala Devi had the best chance of the game as she beat the Villarreal keeper in the box to place a shot, which however, hit the post and went out of play.
Just a few minutes later, Nazaret entered into the Indian box and slotted home to hit the final nail in the coffin of the Indian side.
India are next set to face Bolivia on Saturday at 11:30 PM IST.
