ISL: Hyderabad FC to play at Gachibowli Stadium

Hyderabad: Hyderabad FC, the new Indian Super League (ISL) outfit formed after disbanding Pune franchise FC Pune City is set to play its home matches at Gachibowli Stadium.
Sources from the Telangana Football Stadium have confirmed the said development, further confirming that Gachibowli Stadium is being prepared to host the home games.
FC Pune City, a Wadhawan Group-owned franchisee was disbanded after facing continuous financial losses during their five-season long existence, during which they continued to receive poor attendances during its home games.
FC Pune City were one of the biggest spenders in the entire league, bringing in some big names during their course of existence like the then Greece captain Kostas Katsouranis, David Trezeguet, the then Manchester City assistant coach David Platt to mention a few.
Inspite of building a strong squad, the team failed to make it into the playoffs until 2017, and had another poor outing in 2018-19 season, finishing outside top 4.
The already low attendance of the team's home games dwindled further, and the owners were finally convinced that there is no way the team could break even. Furthermore, the owners faced issues in clearance of payments of the players and the staffs and had to convince the players not to report the matter to higher authorities in this regard.
With former Kerala Blasters CEO Varun Tripuraneni as the new owner, the rebranded franchisee Hyderabad City FC looks to breathe in new life as they will look to create a fanbase in the city of Nizams.
Hyderabad is no new name to Indian football landscape. In fact, it was a prominent part of the picture during the 1950-60 phase. Clubs like Hyderabad Police dominated Indian football and the city produced greats like Syed Abdul Rahim. However, the city gradually faded away from the scene of Indian football.
But with Hyderabad FC, the football fans in the city can expect the glory days to return.
While the official schedule of the Indian Super League mentions FC Pune City, the rebranding is set to be officially announced in the coming days soon.
