06 Jan 2019
Abu Dhabi: Indian football team decimated Thailand 4-1 in their opener at the AFC Asian Cup 2019 to bag all three points. The win turned out to be historic as it was the first for the Blue Tigers after a gap of 55 years in an Asian Cup tournament. It was also India's biggest win at the tournament.
Sunil Chhetri scored a brace, while Anirudh Thapa and Jeje Lalpekhlua scored one each as India breezed past the southeast Asian team. Although Thailand dominated the possession but Indians outclassed the Thais in technical aspects as India fired 15 shots of which 6 were on target, while Thais only managed three on target.
India broke the deadlock as they earned a penalty at the 27th minute which was converted by Chhetri. However the Thais managed to equalise at the 33rd minute when Teerasil Dangda headed the ball home from a set piece.
India however recovered the lead just after second half begun and then there was no looking back for the Blue Tigers. Chhetri's second goal gave India a boost and this was followed by goals from Thapa and substitute Jeje as the scoreline read 4-1 in India's favour at the full time whistle.
With this win India go to the top of the Group A table with three points. India will now face the hosts UAE on 10th January.
