Chelsea Transfer Summary 2020-21

Chelsea Transfer Summary 2020-21

Chelsea football club will be returning from a two-window transfer ban and will be gearing up to splash some cash to strengthen their squad to challenge for the Premier League trophy under the managerial tenure of their very own club legend Frank Lampard. Chelsea has spent around €240 Million in transfer spending making then Premier League’s top spenders. The club eyes this transfer window to be a catalyst of bringing the much-needed change in the squad to suit Lampard’s vision and playing style and will hope to win some silverware and put up a challenge for the Titles at the Domestic and International level

In Goalkeeping, Chelsea already has young Spanish Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga for a world record signing fee of € 75 Million. However, Kepa’s performance is stated at wide off the mark with his dismal show at the sticks being labeled as one of the key reasons for Chelsea’s losses coupled with the infamous altercation in the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City. Petr Cech as Director of Football for the club has outlined the need to address this problem and have identified 28 years old Senegalese keeper Edouard Mendy from Rennes who joined last year from Reims. Cech joined Chelsea from Rennes played a prominent role in convincing Mendy to join Chelsea and closing the deal for € 25 Million. It has been reported that Chelsea has received a loan offer for Kepa which Chelsea is considering offloading with Mendy touted to be the no.1 choice to operate at the sticks.

Chelsea, just like any other club also felt the need to address defensive woes at the center of defense as well as at the flanks. With Kurt Zouma turning into liability and Andreas Christensen not playing up to its full potential, the club opted to bring an experienced defender and enter – THIAGO SILVA. The 36 years old Brazilian center-back has informed his decision to end his stay at Paris Saint Germain and move to have one last European adventure. He is expected to bring his wealth of experience of playing at the center in Italy, Portugal, and France over 15 + years. The club has also signed former Rennes young center-back Malang Sarr on a free transfer. The 21 years old French defender has been immediately loaned out to Portuguese League champions FC PORTO to gain more game time and experience as well as be the newest member of the Chelsea Loan Army. Frank Lampard was impressed with young defender Fikayo Tomori’s performance and does not consider current central defensive leader Antonio Rudiger as a part of his plans for the current season. The German Centre Back was been offered around by the London outfit with Tottenham Hotspurs and Paris Saint Germain showing interest in signing the player, but nothing materialized, and Rudiger will continue playing for the club and fight for his place in the squad. With respect to full-backs, Chelsea has been exposed on the left side due to disappointing performances from left-back pair Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri. Lampard and the board were keen to address the issue and have targeted Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell and have managed to nab him on €60 Million. Inter were interested in signing Emerson Palmieri or Marcos Alonso on loan while Chelsea wanted to keep one of them with Emerson being preferred after reports of an altercation between Alonso and Lampard, but the deal to sign anyone of them broke down leaving Chelsea with 5 Centre Backs as well as Full backs with Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva as prospective club captains.

Chelsea probably has the strongest midfield at the center with N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, and Mateo Kovacic but were lacking the presence of a marquee attacking midfielder with Mason Mount being the only option along with Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus Cheek being listed for transfer on loan. One of Chelsea’s major transfer target for this position has been German Wonderkid Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen. Chelsea, after conducting many talks with the player, his agents, and Leverkusen’s representatives have signed him in a club-record deal amounting to € 94 Million including add-ons. He has been signed to link up with the attackers to create chances and might as well score some goals due to his versatility. There were reports of a possible Miralem Pjanic – Jorginho swap which would see Jorginho returning to Italy in black and white colors, but the swap was rejected by Pjanic himself.

Regarding the attack, the club has figured out the need to have a major overhaul due to the departure of Willian to rival London club Arsenal on a free transfer with their ‘CAPTAIN AMERICA’  Christian Pulisic being the only viable option at the flanks and their current strikers Tammy Abraham, Michy Batshuayi and Olivier Giroud not living up to the expectations. The club made their first moves by extending Olivier Giroud’s stay at Stamford Bridge for another season and sending out Michy Batshuayi again on loan to Crystal Palace, in the hope to sell him next season at a higher valuation owing to his expected above par performances. Chelsea also managed to sign versatile attacker Timo Werner from German club RB Leipzig, after his move to Liverpool didn’t materialise. He can be deployed as a forward or can provide strength to Chelsea’s attack from left which in turn would increase competition for Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson Odoi to nail their starting spots. There have been talks with Bayern Munich regarding transfer of Hudson Odoi which was later being sabotaged by Lampard by reassuring him of being included in his plans for the season.
