COTIF 2019: Indian women go down to young Spain

Valencia: The Indian National Women's football team lost by 2-0 to Spain U-19 here on Wednesday as
they bow out of the tournament. Goals from Jana and Irene turned out to be the difference between the two sides as Spain took the match home despite being down to 10 in number.

Both sides came into the came with intentions of taking nothing less than a win. Spaniards started the game with early dominance and full control over the ball. However, the first real chance of the game came in India's way as Bala Devi's free-kick off a foul just went absconding past the goal.

However the hosts finally managed to get a lead in the 15th minute when FC Barcelona's Jana took the ball across the edge and placed a shot that passed all the players. In the 22nd minute of the game, Ratanbala Devi received a pass that cut through the entire Spanish defence, leaving her in a 1v1 situation with the Spanish keeper Elene. However, Elene in an attempt to block her move, fouled her outside the box.

A VAR review then meant the referee would announce marching orders to the Spanish custodian, causing a huge blow to the hosts as they were now down to 10. Spain, however continued to hold possession despite showing lesser intent to attack as India slowly began to show domination in parts.

India's best chance came in the 28th minute when Bala Devi's shot struck the post. India then kept fighting for an equalizer but India's hopes to get something out of the tie dashed out when referee awarded a penalty to the Spanish side in the 64th minute, which Irene converted as the scoreline remained in the favour of the hosts at the blow of full-time whistle.
