Continuing his Captaincy rotation policy, Indian football head coach Stephan Constantine has decided to give the armband to Gurpreet Singh Sandhu for the first game of the AFC Asian Cup against Thailand. Constantine, in his very first press conference after being appointed the head coach for the second time, said that he will be putting in place a captaincy rotation policy.
The Bengaluru FC goalkeeper has a unique distinction of playing in the Europa League. The Indian number 1 has successfully fought off stiff competition by Subrata Pal and Amrinder Singh to become the undisputed starter for India. He has been capped 27 times for the country, donning the captains armband for the first time against Puerto Rico in September 2016.
This move could mean that India might play with three different captains for the three group games, but nothing has been confirmed as of now. This is also not the first time Stephan Constantine has rotated the captain of his team. When in charge of the Rwanda National team, Constantine had 4 captains wearing the armband in rotation. This is what Constantine had said in November 2018:
“I have rotated the captain since day one. When you have one captain you get only one voice. But if you have four captains, you get more voices from the team. We have new leaders,” Constantine had stated in November 2018."
