India U-23 go down narrowly to Qatar in away friendly.

Doha: India U-23 lost by 1-0 to hosts Qatar in an international friendly played here on Monday. The international friendly match was played as a part of preparations for the upcoming AFC U-23 Championship Qualifiers this year.

India have been placed in group F of the qualifiers round and are slated to play the matches in Uzbekistan. It was the first match in charge of India U-23 side for head coach Derrick Perreira. Amro Abdelfatah Surag was the lone goalscorer on the night as his goal turned out to be the difference between the two sides at the Aspire Academy training complex in Doha.

It was the visitors who dominated the proceedings going early into the match. Komal Thatal, Mehtab Singh and Rahul KP's early exchanges in the opponent's half caused the hosts' defence some problem early on in the match.

Narender Gahlot had the first real chance to put India into the lead as he jumped higher than all the players in defensive duties and sent a powerful header into the goalmouth direction but Qatari keeper Yazam Naim Hussein managed to save the attempt.

India continued to dominate the attack in the first half but Abdelfatah scored a goal against the run of play to give the hosts a lead as he converted a cross from Salmin Attiq from right. In the second half however, the hosts took domination of the game and put India's defence to work.

Boris Singh who was subbed in for Rahul KP, however, missed a great chance to equalize for India as he failed to tap in a cross from Daniel Lahlimpuia. Rahim Ali however had the best chance of the match when he had a an open goal in front of him just 12 yards away from the target, but he scuffled his shot and it went flying above the crossbar.
