Guwahati: Former Nigerian international Bartholomew Ogbeche scored a stunning goal late as late as the 87th minute of the match to ensure that the hosts get all three points. With this win the Highlanders are closer to making it to the top four for the first time in their history.
Both teams came up with a changed starting eleven as Rehenesh TP returned under the bars while Komorski came in to replace Mascia. Visitors made six changes as Inigo Calderon, and Carlos Salon were left out of the squad while Jeje,Thapa were put on the bench.
The visitors dominated the proceedings but survived a penalty scare in the 19th minute when Germanpreet brought down Gallego in the box, which to surprise of the hosts was not awarded as penalty. Northeast found their momentum but relentless attacks were not put into the back of the net, and the scoreline remained 0-0 at halftime.
The attack continued in the second half for NEUFC but poor finishing meant that the scoreline continued to be the same. But when it seemed that the defending champions would scrape a point, captain Ogebeche scored a crucial 87th minute winner as Chennaiyin slumped to their tenth defeat of the season.
"First 10-15 minutes, I think we were scared. I wasn't happy. We were hiding. We created too many chances and in the end, we scored from the most difficult one." said NEUFC boss Eelco Schhatorie.
"I am very happy with the three points but now we have to face the number one team Bengaluru FC next."
