ISL 2020-21 Bengaluru FC vs Odisha FC: Bengaluru earn a hard-fought win over Odisha

Bengaluru FC defeated Odisha FC by 2-1 on Friday night at the GMC Bambolim Athletic Stadium in Goa. The Sunil Chhetri-led side strengthened their bid for the top four with the win.

A goal from Sunil Chhetri helped the former I-league outfit to earn the lead but was later canceled out by Odisha through Steven Taylor before Brazilian Cleiton Silva earned the Blues the winner.

Although Bengaluru started very well in attack, Odisha had the first chance at the goal, when Diego Mauricio set up Manuel Onwu with a neat pass but the latter was ruled offside.

In the 38th minute, the Blues earned the lead when Dimas Delgado passed the ball to Harmanjot Khabra on the right, whose long delivery was headed into the back of the net by Sunil Chhetri.

In the 59th minute, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu was forced into a save by Gaurav Bora who was set up by Shubham Sarangi's cross.

In the 68th minute, Udanta Singh executed a perfect cross for Erik Paartalu, who was unable to put it past custodian Arshdeep Singh.

In the 71st minute, Odisha FC finally earned the equalizer, as a set piece from Jerry Mawihmingthanga was poked home by Steven Taylor. But, Udanta fed Deshorn Brown a perfect pass who set up Cleiton Silva inside the box as the winger finished it first time into the back of the net to earn the winner, shortly after the equalizer.

Bengaluru FC head coach Carles Cuadrat hailed the team's efforts, "It was a very tough game and it was difficult to get the three points. But I am happy because the depth of the squad has shown that they are ready to help the team and this is very important. The players that came onto the pitch helped us get the three points so I am very happy with the work,” Cuadrat said.

"We are a solid and compact team. All the players know what they have to do in different positions. New players need some time to adapt because the level that we demand is very high,” he added.

Cuadrat praised Brazilian Cleiton Silva for the performance he put up on the pitch, "He has a lot of quality and he is very clever while making decisions. He is a fantastic player for us because we can use him as a No. 9, 10 or as a winger. He is one player who is making an impact in the Hero ISL.”

He further updated on Ashique Kuruniyan's injury, "Ashique’s injury looks like a fracture on the face. I am very sorry for him because in my opinion he was our best player this season. It might take some take to get him back."

Odisha FC head coach Stuart Baxter showed his concerns about the time running out to turn the tables, "We have a young group (of players) who are almost playing well but luck is not on their side. They are losing confidence and concentration in every game. We don't have a lot of time to turn the results because of the current situation but this is the job we have in front of us,” said the Englishman after the game.
