ISL 2020-21 Chennaiyin FC vs FC Goa: Chennaiyin's Rahim, Crivellaro make FC Goa bite the dust

The Machans held the Gaurs at their own fort for a narrow win. Chennaiyin FC defeated FC Goa by 2-1 on Saturday night at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa.

Goals from Rafael Crivellaro and Rahim Ali helped the Machans earn all three points against the hosts who only got one on the scoresheet through Jorge Mendoza.

Chennaiyin FC started strong and got chances very early in the match. Anirudh Thapa chested down the ball inside the box and laid it off to Crivellaro whose shot at goal, however, was blocked.

The Machans however found lead soon after in the 5th minute, when an attack lead to a corner for the visitors, Crivellaro's first attempt from the corner was put behind by custodian Mohammed Nawaz, and the retaken corner from the Brazilian curled into the far post beating the entire defence, into the back of the net. This was the first goal for the Brazilian in the season and only the third occasion on which a goal came straight from the corner.

The lead was, however, soon canceled out by the hosts, who found the equalizer through Jorge Ortiz Mendoza. The Spaniard found Alexander Jesuraj in the middle of the park, and the winger carried the ball to the right flank to serve the Spaniard again inside the box who smashed the ball into the top right corner just four minutes after the Machans found the lead.

The Machans had chances to earn the lead again as Thapa, Sylvestr had attempts at goal, but couldn't get the better of the Goan defence. The best chance of the half fell to Lallianzuala Chhangte, but the Indian international winger squandered the opportunity right in front of the goalmouth, leaving the scoreline 1-1 at the break.

The visitors however soon got the breakthrough when Rafael Crivellaro made a run down the left flank and beat the Goan defence to cross the ball to Rahim Ali on the far post, as the substitute tapped in to earn them the lead.

The Gaurs pressed hard in quest of the equalizer but they had few chances and couldn't get the better of the visitors who soaked the pressure well to earn the win.

Chennaiyin FC head coach Csaba Laszlo felt the team needed to be more clinical in finishing upfront despite the win, “We have to be focused [while finishing] if we create so many chances, but it is not because of a lack of confidence. Chhangte had three fantastic chances, even Rafael Crivellaro had a chance to score as well but at the end of the day we got very important three points for us,” said Laszlo.

“A win is always very satisfying. I am proud of the boys and we deserved to win this game. Even if we win every game 2-1, I am happy because we have the three points,” added the 56-year-old.

The coach was happy that his tactics worked well on the night, "My plan was to stop Goa because they can play good offensive football. They have a lot of ball possession and our tactics was to stay compact and prevent any spaces between our players. The team and the boys have done a good job,” said Laszlo.

Meanwhile, FC Goa head coach Juan Ferrando was not happy with the game of his team but felt that fatigue could have been a reason, 'I am disappointed with the game because we were not good with the transitions. We made a lot of mistakes, probably because the players are tired,” he said.

However, the Spaniard had some words of encouragement for 24-year-old Alexander Jesuraj who has been a revelation for FC Goa so far and on the night picked up his third assist of the season. “Jesuraj is good while pressing and also while working in the defence which is why he is in the team. But of course he needs to improve,” said Ferrando.
