ISL 2020-21 FC Goa vs Kerala Blasters: FC Goa defeated Kerala Blasters by 3-1 at home

The Gaurs found all three points through goals from Igor Angulo and Jorge Ortiz Mendoza. FC Goa defeated Kerala Blasters FC by 3-1 on Sunday night at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa.

Igor Angulo scored twice and Jorge Ortiz Mendoza was also on the scoresheet for the hosts while Vincente Gomez scored the consolation goal for the visitors.

It was as early as in the 10th minute of the match when Kerala Blasters almost got the early jolt when a long-distance shot from Ortiz rattled the woodwork, much to the respite of the visitors.

Seven minutes later, it was Igor Angulo who also managed to hit only hit the frame from his shot at the goal after a back pass from Rohit Kumar was intercepted by the Spaniard.

In the 25th minute, Facundo Pereyra shot from the edge of the box but couldn't find the lead for the Blasters as his shot went over the crossbar.

At the half-hour mark, the Gaurs found the lead when a Saviour Gama cross was lobbed over an onrushing keeper into the net by Igor Angulo who drew the first blood.

Lenny Rodriguez was unable to test the keeper from his long-distance attempt in the 41st minute, which was followed by Vincente Gomez's attempt for the visitors, off a Rahul KP cross from the right, which forced custodian Mohammed Nawaz into a save. The Gaurs almost doubled their lead before the halfway point but the goal was ruled offside.

The second half began on the same account as Goans looked to extend their lead. Ortiz managed to successfully do so when in the 52nd minute, Brandon Fernandes played a delightful pass into the box, as the midfielder tucked it across the keeper into the back of the net.

In the 67th minute, Vincente Gomez agonizingly hit the crossbar as Kerala were still trailing by two goals.

They finally managed to reduce the deficit in the last minute of the normal time when a Nishu Kumar cross was headed into the back of the net by Gomez. Costa Nhamoinesu was however sent off on a second yellow just moments later to dampen the momentum of the contest, and a fatal lapse from custodian Albino Gomes a couple of minutes later set up Igor Angulo to double the lead and finish the hopes for Kerala to equalize.

FC Goa head coach Juan Ferrando was pleased with the win, "I am happy with the score because the three points are very important for us. It’s important to continue working to prepare for the next match against Odisha because we have some things that we still need to work on,” Ferrando said at the post-match press conference.

Ferrando assessed this team’s performance on the night. “After the score became 2-0 Goa were better than Kerala for almost 10-15 minutes but only after the 2-0. Kerala were playing very well with players like Facundo Pereyra and Vicente Gomez, who are fantastic players. I think more about the transitions than the goals. Our next target is Odisha FC and we will aim for the three points once again,” said Ferrando.

He further heaped praises on Oritz, “I am very happy with Ortiz’s performance because he is working a lot. He has a lot of quality while shooting or crossing and day by day his performance is getting better,” Ferrando said.

Kerala Blasters head coach Kibu Vicuna acknowledged that Goa were better, "FC Goa were generally better than us. Both teams created chances but we gave away too much defensively. We gave them a lot of possibilities. They have very good players and I think it was a fight for the ball,” he said after the match

However, the coach was not too disappointed, "We are in the process. Sergio (Cidoncha) is also injured which has affected the morale of the team but we have to keep going. We have some difficult matches coming up but we are confident that we will play well and perform well,” he said.
