ISL 2020-21 Hyderabad FC vs Chennaiyin FC: Hyderabad crush Chennaiyin

Hyderabad FC defeated Chennaiyin FC by 4-1 on Monday night at the GMC Bambolim Athletic Stadium. Hyderabad FC came out victorious in a high-scoring tie.

A brace from Halicharan Narzary and goals from Joel Chianese and Joao Victor helped the Nizams to humble the last season runners-up who had only a goal on the scoresheet thanks to Anirudh Thapa.

Hyderabad were in the thick of things from the first minute itself. Akash Mishra dished out a sweet ball to Aridane Santana who headed the ball towards Joel Chianese but the latter couldn’t reach to the end of it as Vishal Kaith made a crucial save.

In the 9th minute, Chennaiyin had a chance when a ball was played through the middle to Sylvestr and the latter made a cross across the goal but it missed every Chennaiyin man upfront.

Both the goalkeepers had a busy first half but Vishal Kaith was the busier of the two as the latter had to make more saves.

Chennaiyin FC built well with the ball but were unable to get the better of the defence. Meanwhile, Hyderabad had chances aplenty but they lacked the cutting edge.

The scoreline remained goalless at the break.

The second half began with Hyderabad getting their noses in front in just five minutes.

Aridane Santana played a half-hearted long ball to Joel Chianese but a horrible miscommunication between Vishal Kaith and Eli Sabia led to poor clearance by the latter who only lost it to an onrushing Joel Chianese as the ball rebounded off him to roll into the back of the net.

Just three minutes later the Nizams doubled the lead through Halicharan Narzary. In the 53rd minute, a clearance from Vishal Kaith was headed back to Asish Rai who played the ball in the middle of the park to Chianese, as the latter’s shot was cleared by Kaith only to Halicharan Narzary who slotted the ball home.

Chennaiyin FC upped the ante in search of a goal and had one in the 67th minute. Reagan Singh’s ball forward was horribly mishandled by Laxmikant Kattimani who only cleared it to Anirudh Thapa as the latter hit it sweetly into the back of the net.

But the respite of the reduced deficit didn’t last for more than 6 minutes as Joao Victor doubled the lead again for the visitors. It was initially Fran Sandaza whose shot was cleared but the ball fell to Yasir who laid it for Victor who finished it brilliantly.

Halicharan Narzary hit the final nail in the coffin in the 79th minute when Sandaza played a ball to him in a counter-attack. The Indian winger calmly slotted the ball home to put visitors 4-1 up.

Hyderabad FC head coach Manuel Marquez was elated after the win, “Finally! We can be happy because I think the team played a very good game. With a lot of chances in the first half, we couldn’t score and failed. But in the second half, we scored one in the rebound and then Chennaiyin had to take a risk and we took the chances with space at the back from them.

You’re like a coach who knows perfectly that you want to have available the best players. Fran was out with injury, Joel, and Sastre the same. Sometimes it’s tough, the level of the Indian players was great in the beginning but then I think they got tired. Now, let’s see what’s happened with Fran. We do have Aridane and Joel though. We wanted to give Aridane rest with the last substitution but then Fran got injured.”

‘‘I think all the coaches, we want to have this problem (of plenty), we have to manage the situation. We have now 11 games in less than two months, if we can manage the situation, we will be fantastic. If injuries happen again, it would be difficult but I am very happy with my squad and I hope Indian players continue as well.”

Chennaiyin FC head coach Csaba Laszlo was bitterly disappointed with the outcome, “Even the first half was a poor performance. Even in the first half, it could be 3-0 in the first half. I must be honest, this wasn’t a football match from my team. We were happy with some of our games but today, we were not good. The goalkeeper didn’t even have to make saves. I try defending my team but today, very, very bad performance from everyone. May be Vishal, if he doesn’t make saves today, it could be seven-eight goals. We didn’t have Crivellaro and our offence was not definitely not good.

I think I try today to have players in the middle with Chhangte and Memo, they can play football but there was no creativity. Someone who can take the ball and make those passes, we missed that today. Even if you pass the ball but there is no movement off the ball, if there is no ideas and creativity, it doesn’t make any difference as we saw today.”
