ISL 2020-21 NorthEast United vs Bengaluru FC: NorthEast United share spoils with Bengaluru
NorthEast United FC played out a 2-2 draw with Bengaluru FC on Tuesday night at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa. The match ended in a high-scoring draw where both sides had chances aplenty.
Machado's brace helped NorthEast United to settle scores with Bengaluru who were cruising to win thanks to goals from Juanan and Udanta Singh.NorthEast United got their noses on the front as early as in the 4th minute of the match when Suhair Vadakepeedikka crossed the ball from the right flank to Rochharzela, who took a shot at goal but his effort took a deflection off Machado to send Gurpreet the wrong way as the ball ended up in the back of the net.
Nine minutes later Juanan equalized for the hosts following a goalmouth melee from a Rahul Bheke long throw-in.
Ashique Kuruniyan made a blistering run down the left and took a shot at the far post in the 19th minute but Gurmeet dived to make a save. Harmanjot Khabra also foxed a defender in the 26th minute to take a shot at the goal which went off the target.
In the second half, Bengaluru got the lead in the 70th minute when Sunil Chhetri headed the ball to the far post and Udanta Singh executed a perfect finish to put the hosts in the lead.
But, the visitors canceled out the lead when Machado banked on poor defence by Juanan to find himself in a 1v1 situation with Gurpreet and managed to slot the ball home.
NorthEast United head coach Gerard Nus was pleased with the team's efforts, although the team only managed to get a point from the encounter, “I am happy with a lot of the things that we did today. There has been a massive effort from the players. The last game was three days ago. We try to rotate the players as much as we can because these players deserve it."
“We wanted to get the three points but everything can change against a side like Bengaluru. We knew it was going to be very tough but I take this result as a positive one,” said Nus after the game.
On giving chances to Suhair VP and Rochharzela in the starting lineup, he said, "Every game is an opportunity for the players. Every game is a challenge for the coach to decide who starts and who will come in. It’s a huge task for the coaching staff but I am happy with my performance,” Nus said.
Bengaluru FC head coach Carles Cuadrat acknowledged that the team had to work hard to earn a point, "We were working for the three points and trying our best. We came back after a bad start when they scored easily. We were very close to the three points. We are creating a lot of chances and the team is improving step-by-step.”
The Spaniard was also all praises for his opponents, “I have to congratulate NorthEast as well. They were very good defensively and played very well on the counter. They have started well. They are very positive right now so they are doing well. It might be very difficult to beat them.”
