ISL: Sporting Gijon midfielder joins Mumbai City FC
The 30-year old is yet another addition to a strong roster of the Islanders.
Mumbai: Former Las Palmas and Sporting Gijon midfielder Hernan Santana has agreed for a permanent move to Mumbai City FC, sources confirm. Sporting Gijon has announced the departure of the Spaniard on their official handles.
Following an unsuccessful campaign in the second division as the club was unable to reach the Spanish top flight La Liga, Sporting Gijon terminated his contract, which was supposed to last till 2021, after which he agreed to move to India with City Football Group-owned outfit.
The Islanders are looking to build a strong roster this season with the club signing former FC Goa coach Sergio Lovers and already having splashed huge money to rope in some key players of his former side, which includes Hugo Boumous for a whopping 1.6 crore rupees, who will now partner Santana in the midfield for the upcoming season.
Hernan Santana brings in good experience with him, having appeared in 164 La Liga, Copa Del Rey and La Liga 2 matches.
Having rose out of UD Las Palmas academy, Santana made his way into the senior team in 2012 and played almost 6 years for the club. He made his La Liga debut on 22 August, 2015 in a 0-1 loss to Atletico Madrid. He scored his first goal for the club on 31st October the same year in a 1-3 loss to Real Madrid. In 2018, he signed up for Sporting Gijon, but was a bench-warmer for most of his time at the club.
With Ogbeche and Adam La Fondre upfront, the new midfielder signing will be a huge boost for the attacking football gameplay Lobera brings in at the club.
