Marta surpasses Miroslav Klose to become the highest goalscorer in World Cup

Brazilian star Marta converted a 74th minute penalty kick against Italy to secure a 1-0 win, scoring her 17th and historic goal in the process. The goal helped Brazil to a desperate victory over Italy which was enough for them to secure a passage into the knockout stages of the World Cup as one of the four best 3rd placed team.

Marta had the responsibility of doing her country’s bit to qualify for the knockout stages by winning the game with a 74th minute penalty kick. She stepped up and kicked the ball into the bottom-right hand corner to put her country in the lead. They ended up not adding to the goal tally, but the goal was enough to help Marta become the greatest goalscorer in the World Cup.

Marta has the incredible achievement of being the only player to score in 5 different editions of the World Cup. She has scored 112 goals in 145 appearances for Brazil overall, and she is just 33 years old. She had her best World Cup in 2007, scoring 7 times as Brazil had a run to the finals of the competitions, losing to the Germans in the end.

Overall, Marta scored three times in her maiden World Cup in 2003, 7 times in the 2007 World Cup, 4 times in the 2011 World Cup, once in the 2015 World Cup and the latest penalty brought her tally to 2 goals in the 2019 World Cup and 17 overall. In terms of Women’s football, Marta is now 3 goals ahead of both Brigit Prinz (Germany) and Abby Wambach (USA), both of whom have scored 14 goals each.

Apart from her World Cup record, Marta has won the FIFA Player of the Year 6 times, helped her country win the silver medals at the Olympics twice apart from the FIFA World Cup finals run in 2007. With three heartbreaks in major finals, Marta will be hoping to bring some glory to her country and add more goals to her World Cup tally, which will add further light between her and her closest competitors.

Brazil are yet to find out whom they will face in the Round of 16, with the rankings of three groups yet to be decided.
