Bhubhaneshwar: I-league champions Chennai City FC beat Bengaluru FC by 2-1 here at the Kalinga Stadium on Thursday to knock the ISL champions out of the competition. Bengaluru FC were the winners of the Super Cup last year.
Nestor Gordillo and Pedro Manzi scored the goals for the winning side while Sunil Chhetri scored the lone goal for the Blues on the night. However CCFC custodian Mauro Boerchio turned out to be the star of the side as he saved a penalty.
The initial part of the match was dominated by Bengaluru, who made constant forays into the Chennai City defence and piled up the pressure. However, they failed to register even a shot on target, and Chennai City inspite of appearing a little jittery at the back, managed to ward off the danger from time to time.
Nestor Gordillo in the 15th minute of the match scored against the run of play to give CCFC the lead. The Spaniard received a great ball from Tarif Akhand and managed to slot it past Gurpreet calmly.
Xisco had a great chance to equalize for the Blues when Miku lobbed the ball to him but he couldn't beat the keeper. Bengaluru survived a scare in the 35th minute when Khabra made a rash challenge on CCFC custodian inside the box, striking at the latter's shin. He however was only awarded a yellow card.
Bengaluru began the second half with attacking mindset and managed to find a penalty in the 52nd minute when Romario tugged Chhetri's shirt inside the penalty box. But the penalty attempt from Chhetri was saved by custodian Mauro Boerchio.
Things became worser for the newly crowned ISL champions as Pedro Manzi doubled the lead for Chennai City in the 55th minute. Bengaluru pulled one goal back in the 65th minute when Sunil Chhetri struck into the back of the net from a corner delivered by Dimas Delgado.
Bengaluru intensified their attack after this in pursuit of finding the equalizer but Mauro Boerchio and the CCFC backline held their nerves to win the match and quality to the semis of the cup tournament.
