When ex-Celtic defender Virgil Van Dijk joined Liverpool on €75 Million deal making it highest paid deal for a defender, it was been anticipated that it would been broken soon. Well, one year later, Leicester City’s Harry Maguire broke that record by joining Manchester United on six-year contract for € 85 Million. Their derby rivals Manchester City were on trial for Maguire for quite some time. The Etihad outfit was looking to replace their captain and leader and he was touted as his perfect replacement. His leadership quality giving him freedom to ease in back four along with being an English player would help the club to fulfill their twin objectives. However, the club wasn’t on board with Leicester valuation of the player. Even though it has been reported that Maguire wishes to play under Pep Guardiola and has agreed personal terms, Leicester City didnt want to reduce the asking price. As a result, City chose to walk out and instead went ahead to slot Fernandinho as a Centre Back option
Manchester United, on the other hand, were looking for someone to headline their central defense. Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof are no longer being trusted as first choice centre back pair. Also, rumours surrounding Marcus Rojo departure has made signing Centre back a priority. Joined Leicester from Hull City in 2017, his strong 6-foot-4 frame aids him in the air. He's a hard worker full of confidence and does a great job tackling one on one. He also reads the ball well and has the ability to get to the ground to stop passes into the box or shots. No shortage of confidence either. United agreed demands of both selling club as well as the player and have ended two-month long chase. Maguire earns now € 210k/week which is more than double of what he earns at Leicester. Till now, Maguire started in both matches for United against Chelsea and Wolves and was praised for his performance on the field with fans hailing him as ‘Future of United’s Defense’.
